“Monument Almost Seen (Independenței)” documents a public performance realized during the National Road Safety Week in Iași, Romania. Starting from the site of a fatal road accident that occurred in September 2021, the project measures and marks with chalk the distance required for a complete stop at the speed at which the vehicle was reportedly traveling (approximately 148.5 km/h).
Borrowing from the language of road accident reconstruction, the intervention reconfigures a technical measurement as a temporary memorial marker. The marked distance refers to a hypothetical act of stopping, one that could have prevented the impact, but did not take place. A procedure normally used to establish responsibility becomes a fragile public inscription, transforming data into remembrance.
The work treats the city as both evidence and witness, asking how a system designed for calculation, regulation, and forensic reconstruction can be redirected toward collective memory.
